Types of GST in India

GST is divided into three components based on whether the supply is intra-state or inter-state.

CGST

CGST (Central Goods and Services Tax)

Collected by the Central Government on intra-state (within the same state) supply of goods and services. The rate is half of the total GST rate.

Example: For an 18% GST rate, CGST is 9%

SGST

SGST (State Goods and Services Tax)

Collected by the State Government on intra-state supply of goods and services alongside CGST at half of the total GST slab.

Example: For an 18% GST rate, SGST is 9%

IGST

IGST (Integrated Goods and Services Tax)

Collected by the Central Government on inter-state (between different states) supply of goods and services. IGST equals CGST + SGST.

Example: For interstate transactions, full 18% IGST applies

How to Calculate GST Manually?

Standard GST Exclusive and GST Inclusive formulas used in billing and accounting

Adding GST (Exclusive)

When you have the pre-tax base price and need to calculate the total invoice amount including GST:

GST AmountGST = (Original Price × GST%) ÷ 100
Total AmountTotal = Original Price + GST Amount
Example (18% GST):
For ₹1,000 at 18% GST:
GST = (1000 × 18) ÷ 100 = ₹180
Total = 1000 + 180 = ₹1,180

Removing GST (Inclusive)

When you have the MRP or total price including GST and need to extract the base taxable value:

Original AmountOriginal = Total × (100 ÷ (100 + GST%))
GST AmountGST = Total – Original Amount
Example (18% GST):
For ₹1,180 at 18% GST:
Original = 1180 × (100 ÷ 118) = ₹1,000
GST = 1180 – 1000 = ₹180

FAQs on GST Rates in India 2026

Common questions about the 2026 GST tax slabs and our online calculator

What happens to goods sold before the new rates started?

Invoices raised before 22 September 2025 continue under the previous GST structure. Any billing, supply, or payment made after that date follows the updated 4-slab rates. Businesses should track the ‘time of supply’ to keep GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B entries aligned.

What is the effect on essential goods?

Most essential goods—food grains, medicines, milk, and basic daily necessities—are taxed at 0% or 5%, lowering consumer costs and simplifying compliance for retailers and distributors.

How do I check which GST rate applies to my product?

You can verify the applicable GST rate by searching the HSN/SAC code on the official GST portal, checking your supplier purchase invoice, or using Vyapsetu’s Smart Billing module where HSN codes and GST slabs are mapped to your product catalog.

Do these tax slabs apply across all states?

Yes. GST is a nationwide indirect tax, meaning these rates apply uniformly across all Indian states and Union Territories. Intra-state supplies split the rate equally into CGST and SGST, while inter-state supplies apply the full rate as IGST.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?

CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) are charged on intra-state transactions (within the same state), each being half of the total GST rate. IGST (Integrated GST) is charged on inter-state transactions (between different states) and equals the full GST rate.

Can I claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on GST paid?

Yes, GST-registered businesses can claim Input Tax Credit on eligible business purchases to offset their output GST liability, provided supplier invoices are reflected in GST returns.
